Game Notes

Ondrej Pavelec was the story as the Jets beat the Penguins 2-1 at home. Pavelec was simply amazing and should receive most credit for the first win in franchise history.

WhiteOutNation.com gives its' Double Bowl Wave (TM) to Ondrej Pavelec for his outstanding play!

But that's not the full story. With both all-world centers Crosby and Malkin out of the lineup, the jets outhustled and out battled the pens for the puck along the boards and in the corners for nearly 60 minutes. Those few times breakdowns occurred Pavelec bailed his team out.

Coach Noel juggle the lines with Kane's injury keeping him out of the game. The first line remained intact and produced a fair number of chances throughout the night. The second line featured veteran Antropov at center with Burmistrov on left and Wellwood on right. The third line was MacLean on left, with Stapleton on right and Scheifele at center. And the "fourth" line was Slater centering Glass and Thorburn. The entire forward corps played very well and had the jump they needed to produce a win.

On defence the giveaways in the defensive zone were lessened in number and quality. The blueliners played with extra sizzle this night as the game featured an end-to-end rush by Bogosian that led to a puck off the post, soundly beating Fleury in the Pens goal. Big Buff was all over the ice as he made many attempts down low in the offensive corners generating some nifty chances along with way.

Jets defenceman Ron Hainsey left the game due to injury and did not return.

Game Notes

Our Jets had another rough outing.

With barely a half minute gone, Big Biff misplayed the puck behind our net allowing the coyotes to pounce on it and moving it out into the slot for a point blank shot that was past goaltender Chris Mason before he could react.

While the Jets were scrambling in their own zone, a shot from near the boards on the right hash fooled Mason to the short side to make it a 2-0 lead for the Coyotes. Although Mason looked better through the night, that goal seems really to deflate the Jets.

Rookie Mark Scheifele looked decent, or as decent as one could look in a 4-1 loss.

Head coach Claude Noel started line juggling in earnest midway through the game with few combinations that looked sound.

Overall the team looks very disjointed and at times their level of effort seemed to appear to be disinterested. If there's one unforgivable sin for the Jets, it will be to have been outworked by their opposition.

Win, lose or draw, the fans will expect better efforts or become rather restless well before the first quarter pole of the season.

Game Notes

The Jets came flying out of the gate with two Slater goals in just the first 5 minutes of the game.  The Jets led the shots 5-0 at that point.

Then Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville called a timeout and served his troops notice.

With that, the Original Six team took the game completely away from the Jets and swung the shot clock to 20-6 in their favour.

Once again, the Slater-Glass combination seemed to be the Jets line with the most jump throughout the game.

The Wellwood line was average as Scheifele must be noticing that the regular season game is at full gear whereas preseason veterans were merely going through the motions. Evander Kane also improved over Sunday but was still average overall.

The biggest concern is the lack of chances that the number one line is generating. Captain Ladd on left and Wheeler on right centered by Bryan Little will get the lion's share of ice time, but that won't last forever given the first two games to base it upon.

Ondrej Pavelec bailed his team out on several Chicago scoring chances yet the sweaker that slipped between him and the near post turned out to be the game winner for the Hawks. Overall, it was somewhere between a good to terrific appearance by our number one trigger in net.

The passing from our defence still needs refining. The breakouts aren't clean and some of that is due to the forwards having too much space between themselves and our blueliners.

Overall, it was disappointing that we lost the game after leading by 2 goals. However, this is a very powerful team we played and but for the sake of a couple of miscues and defensive zone giveaways, we could have easily won this game. This team clearly can challenge for the playoffs given an effort like this one throughout a full 60 minutes and a full season.

Game Notes

The Jets had a nervous start for their first period start. Many minutes elapsed  until ther Jets took the second shot on Carey Price. The Jets characteristically have jumped out of the gate with many first period shots in the preseason. Let's hope this was an aberration instead of the norm.

With roughly 15 minutes left in the third period and down 2-0, the Jets scored to cut the deficit in half. Moments later Byfuglien is interfered with by a Montreal Canadien, yet it is Byfuglien who drew the lamest penalty call in recent memory. This led to a clrealy demoralizing goal that took the wind from beneath the Jets wings just at a time that the rally was beginning in earnest. TSN will undoubtingly call this their turning point. If the Jets will make the playoffs this season, they will have to emotionally toughen up and realize that they must beat two teams on the ice: the opposing team and the officials.

There were few forwards for the Jets that carried the mail. While Burmistrov showed flashes of brilliance with the puck, he is neutralized when play is along the boards. Linemates MacLean and Antropov were less than average even with their lone goal scored. Bright spots included Jets forwards Tanner Glass and Jim Slater who seemed to regularly pressure in the offensive zone, while Chris Thorburn must keep up better with the play as well as develop a chip-on-shoulder approach to his game. Thorburn needs to bring sandpaper out of the ice or he will be as effective as sitting in the pressbox.

Clearly, when your checking line is getting kudos before even the mere mentioning of the top two lines, Jets fans have a strong sense as to their overall effectiveness. While Scheifele did not stand out as he has throughout the preseason, it is equally true that none of the other top 6 forwards did either. What promises to continue to draw storylines is that Scheifele does not look out of place playing in the NHL. Will that be enough to keep him in the bigs is the million dollar salary and question.

Coach Noel started to tinker with line combos during the first game suggesting our coach will not take this loss easily. As for the opening faceoff during the third period, it was our checking line on the ice, which is sure to send a message to his bench that the performance wasn't near satisfactory and that the ice time will be earned not merely granted.

Ondrej Pavelec also looked rather ordinary in goal for the Jets. We're inclinded to give him the benefit of the doubt as his teammates allowed several miscues to turn into fullblown breakdowns leaving our starting goaltender hanging on the laundry line. A bailout or two by Pavelec just might of kickstarted the rally.

And now for the ugly. Johnny Oduya will probably wish to forget his Jets homecoming game. His ill-advised cross-ice pass led to Cammalleri's gift goal. Later, his one on one battle with Plekanec turned into a breakaway when Oduya either lost track of the puck or the forward or both. As for the rest fo the blueliners, none of the first passes were crisp and spot-on. To be fair to our defencemen, most shifts had our forwards out of position to receive the pass causing our defence to make rather difficult first passes that led to a turnoverfest that the speedy Canadiens feasted upon all game long.
