Game Notes
The Jets had a nervous start for their first period start. Many minutes elapsed until ther Jets took the second shot on Carey Price. The Jets characteristically have jumped out of the gate with many first period shots in the preseason. Let's hope this was an aberration instead of the norm.
With roughly 15 minutes left in the third period and down 2-0, the Jets scored to cut the deficit in half. Moments later Byfuglien is interfered with by a Montreal Canadien, yet it is Byfuglien who drew the lamest penalty call in recent memory. This led to a clrealy demoralizing goal that took the wind from beneath the Jets wings just at a time that the rally was beginning in earnest. TSN will undoubtingly call this their turning point. If the Jets will make the playoffs this season, they will have to emotionally toughen up and realize that they must beat two teams on the ice: the opposing team and the officials.
There were few forwards for the Jets that carried the mail. While Burmistrov showed flashes of brilliance with the puck, he is neutralized when play is along the boards. Linemates MacLean and Antropov were less than average even with their lone goal scored. Bright spots included Jets forwards Tanner Glass and Jim Slater who seemed to regularly pressure in the offensive zone, while Chris Thorburn must keep up better with the play as well as develop a chip-on-shoulder approach to his game. Thorburn needs to bring sandpaper out of the ice or he will be as effective as sitting in the pressbox.
Clearly, when your checking line is getting kudos before even the mere mentioning of the top two lines, Jets fans have a strong sense as to their overall effectiveness. While Scheifele did not stand out as he has throughout the preseason, it is equally true that none of the other top 6 forwards did either. What promises to continue to draw storylines is that Scheifele does not look out of place playing in the NHL. Will that be enough to keep him in the bigs is the million dollar salary and question.
Coach Noel started to tinker with line combos during the first game suggesting our coach will not take this loss easily. As for the opening faceoff during the third period, it was our checking line on the ice, which is sure to send a message to his bench that the performance wasn't near satisfactory and that the ice time will be earned not merely granted.
Ondrej Pavelec also looked rather ordinary in goal for the Jets. We're inclinded to give him the benefit of the doubt as his teammates allowed several miscues to turn into fullblown breakdowns leaving our starting goaltender hanging on the laundry line. A bailout or two by Pavelec just might of kickstarted the rally.
And now for the ugly. Johnny Oduya will probably wish to forget his Jets homecoming game. His ill-advised cross-ice pass led to Cammalleri's gift goal. Later, his one on one battle with Plekanec turned into a breakaway when Oduya either lost track of the puck or the forward or both. As for the rest fo the blueliners, none of the first passes were crisp and spot-on. To be fair to our defencemen, most shifts had our forwards out of position to receive the pass causing our defence to make rather difficult first passes that led to a turnoverfest that the speedy Canadiens feasted upon all game long.
